Sant’Elia – A magical fishing village
Sant’Elia is a small village on the north-west coast of Sicily. Until very recently the entire local economy was fishing, and you can’t be mistaken about its importance to the region today when you start to count the colourful little boats pulled up onto the beach or bobbing around on the clear blue waters. A quietly magical scene.
A pair of large bars stand directly by the village beach. Cool off after a long day in the sun like the locals, with a fizzy chinotto or an evening aperitivo.
Sant’Eiia is a real hidden gem, with absolutely no hint of the mass tourism you’ll find in many of Sicily’s beach towns. If only they knew what they were missing! The Caletta [beach of] Sant’Elia is one of the most picturesque bays in Sicily. Listed and protected by the FAI, the Italian Foundation for the Protection of Monuments and the Environment, you can swim here in perfect safety and comfort late into autumn.
The picture-perfect coves, enchanting little beaches and stunning rocky backdrop will bring to mind the beauty of the Côte d’Azur. Unlike the real French Riviera, however, it is still well off the tourist trail. Their loss! In and around Sant’Elia are a multitude of tiny treasures you’ll have almost to yourselves.
If you like your holidays a little more active, the Monte Catalfano nature reserve and the fascinating ancient ruins of Solunto are within easy reach by car or bike.
The railway station of S. Flavia-Solunto-Porticello is only two kilometres away. Trains from here will take you to the centre of Palermo in just twenty minutes.
